Grade 11 English FAL consolidates and extends the work of Grade 10 at a level that directly prepares learners for the NSC examination. - Advanced concord: complex agreement rules in sophisticated sentences
- Vocabulary: word formation — derivation, compounding, abbreviation
- Oral: formal presentation on a research topic
- Read argumentative and persuasive texts — evaluate logic, identify fallacies
- Write a sustained argumentative essay — 300+ words, with counter-argument
- Poetry analysis: imagery, diction, tone, mood, theme, form, figurative language
- Compare two poems in a structured essay response
- Visual texts: multi-modal analysis — composition, colour, layout, text relationship
- Revision of all grammar: parts of speech, tenses, voice, speech, concord, clauses
- Oral: argue a complex position or analyse a visual text
- Unseen comprehension — NSC exam conditions, time pressure
- Summary writing: 70-word and 100-word summaries
- Revision of all writing formats to NSC standard
- Grammar consolidation: all structures from Grades 10–11
- NSC paper structure: understand what each section requires
- Vocabulary and spelling: personal word lists, common error patterns
- Oral: final prepared speech or dramatic reading
- Reflect: identify weak areas and make a targeted revision plan
NSC letter format must be perfect. Address, date, reference, salutation, body, closing — every layout mark is free. Learn it cold.
Argumentative essays need a thesis in paragraph 1. State your position clearly. Examiners look for it immediately.
Summary: every point must come from the text. You cannot add your own ideas. Paraphrase the main points, count words exactly.
Passive voice in all tenses is always tested. Is written / was written / will be written / would be written — know all forms.
Fix grammar gaps before Grade 12. There is no time in Grade 12 to re-learn basics. Every gap costs marks in the NSC.
